The Trustworthy Prophetic Word

16 For we did not follow acunningly devised fables when we made known to you the bpower and ccoming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were deyewitnesses of His majesty.
17 For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: a“This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
18 And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on athe holy mountain.
19 1And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a alight that shines in a dark place, buntil cthe day dawns and the morning star rises in your dhearts;
20 knowing this first, that ano prophecy of Scripture is of any private1 interpretation,
21 for aprophecy never came by the will of man, bbut holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

What Does 2 Peter 1:16 Mean?

Peter refers here to the transfiguration recorded in Matthew 17, Mark 9, and Luke 9, where he, James, and John were eyewitnesses. That event confirmed the prophecies made of old. When Jesus was transfigured and glorified before them, He did not take on a different shape or form; He still had a recognizable face and clothing, but everything became shining and bright. This impressed on these three men that Jesus was God in the flesh. Peter urges pressing forward in faith, knowing the prophecies originated in God, not men, as the prophets spoke as God motivated them by His Holy Spirit. The Scriptures are not fairy tales or inventions of imaginative men, and can be trusted up to Christ's return because God's reputation and power guarantee them.

2 Peter 1:16-21

Peter is probably referring here to the transfiguration recorded in Matthew 17, Mark 9 and Luke 9. Peter, James, and John were eyewitnesses to that event, and it confirmed to them the prophecies made of old. He then urges us to press forward in faith knowing that the guarantee of the prophecies in God's Word is that they originated in God, not in men. The prophets spoke or wrote as God motivated them by His Holy Spirit. God's very words came through them to us. The Scriptures are not the invention of creative and imaginative men. They are not fairy tales, and we can trust them right on up to the return of Christ and our resurrection because the reputation and power of God are their surety.

2 Peter 1:16

When Peter recollected in II Peter 1:16, he was recalling the event in Matthew 17. When Jesus was transfigured, glorified before them, He did not take on a different shape and form than He had before. He still had a recognizable face. He still had clothing on, but everything became shining and bright. Undoubtedly, this was done to impress on the minds of these three men that this Jesus was God in the flesh.
