The Jews took that "live" to mean that if they just kept the law, they would be abundantly blessed in their present life. They thought that it was the way to wealth, to riches, to honor, and to glory within the community. But they took it another step further. They thought that if they would keep them, God would was then going to guarantee that they would live eternally. And in one sense, they did a good job of keeping the law.

Like I said, they were disciplined people, self-controlled people, and even in their communities the Pharisees were the ones that were respected by the people because of these things. But can you see the flaw in this? It is such a simple flaw. Brethren, all anybody has to do it is break the law one time and the law claims its penalty of death. All Adam and Eve had to do was to break it once and they would be out of the presence of God, and cut off.

There is a little bit more than an implication here. It comes from Leviticus 18.

I am sure that the Jews understood this, and that is, in order for a person to receive eternal life by lawkeeping, he would have to keep the law perfectly, sinlessly, because it says there, "If you keep the law, you shall live in it." It is implying eternally.

The importance of this to us is that this verse is the very first inkling in the book of Romans of the subject of grace. He does not mention it here, but anybody understanding verse 13 (knowing that they have sinned, they have not lived up to the law perfectly), [would say] "How can you be justified by lawkeeping?" See, it plays a part, but everybody knows that they are going to fall short of the glory of God if they understand that verse at all.

Keep this in mind. A child needs rules and limits so he can live by them. The children of Israel were just that to God. They were children, and the way He approaches Israel in their training is very instructive to us. He gave them lots of laws, lots of rules, lots of regulations, and He gave them so they couldlive by them. He did not give them so that they would be burdened. He did not give them so that they would feel like they could not do anything. He gave them so they could live, and live the way He expected them to live.

I think it becomes clear here that when this introduction is filled in with the laws that follow in this and in the next two chapters, that God intends that separation from the world begins in the home at the very earliest possible point in a child's infancy, with a right example from the parents, combined with positive instruction. In order to really fill that out we would have to go through it verse by verse. But those of you who know, chapter 18 mostly focuses on sexual immorality. Hardly anything will destroy a family like sexual immorality.

If we do keep His law, they produce life because of whose laws they are. It is not the laws themselves that are going to produce life (verse 5), they are just signs. It is because of who stands behind and gave those laws that they produce life. They are the Creator God’s laws giving directions regarding how we are to live. It is because of Him that they produce life. God’s laws give counsel on all levels of life: physical, moral, spiritual, and relational.

For the purposes of this analogy, we are considering those doings that are being done ahead on the earth (where God’s throne will be set), are still done according to the practices and customs of Satan and his demons. This is what we must recognize, behind Jesus Christ, that we must be upholding the name of “I AM,” the Lord our God, not the name of Satan as the lord our god.

This is saying essentially that, “If you keep My commandments, you will live in My favor, and you will be blessed.” That is the implication of what He is saying.
