That was God’s desire. And every time the priests said this blessing, it was to convey this desire of God to provide for them, and bless them, and be gracious to them, and smile upon them, and do good things to them.

So God was telling them “I am watching over you, I favor you, I love you, and I want to give you peace.” The word here is ‘shalom’ which we think of as peace, but it is so much more than that. Keil and Delitzsch, the commentators, say “Shalom is the sum of all good which God sets, prepares, and establishes for His people.” In other words, “I want to give you everything that will give you a good life and a good future.” So He says, “I will bless them.” That is, in short, what His meaning is that these priests are to convey every time they come upon the children of Israel. God is here to bless. That is His intention. And you know what, we usually screw it up.

When Jesus appeared and deliberately spoke peace to the disciples, He was also their divine High Priest. When the priest spoke peace by God’s commission, it included God’s keeping of His people, His making His face shine on them, being gracious to them, and lifting up His countenance upon them. Remember that His appearance after His resurrection resumed His conversation with them on Passover, and He reassured them that even though He wouldn’t be with them in the same physical way, He was still with them. And the first thing He said to them was, “peace.” If they believed Him, then they would know they could also depend on all the other gifts found in the priestly blessing.

We already mentioned Psalm 27:1: “The Lord is [our] light and [our] salvation.” Well, if Jesus is saying He is the light of the world, then He is saying—what? That He is equivalent to the Lord in the Old Testament. Numbers 6:24-26 says that God’s people enjoy grace and peace in the light of God’s presence. The servant of the Lord, in Isaiah 49:6, is the light to the nations. And so He is essentially telling them at this point that He is the Messiah.

He was the only one that could do it. And the priestly blessing shows that it would only come through our Mediator and High Priest, Jesus Christ.
