30a‘But the person who does anything1 presumptuously, whetherheis native-born or a stranger, that one2 brings reproach on the Lord, and he shall be3 cut off from among his people.
31 Because he has adespised the word of the Lord, and has broken His commandment, that person shall be completely cut off; his1 guilt shallbe upon him.’ ”
Penalty for Violating the Sabbath
32 Now while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, athey found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath day.
33 And those who found him gathering sticks brought him to Moses and Aaron, and to all the congregation.
34 They put him aunder guard, because it had not been explained what should be done to him.
The conclusion is inescapable that the man who sinned here did so presumptuously. It was something of which he was well aware, and the sin was not forgiven. Instead, the death penalty was carried out.
