Psalms 10:1

A Song of Confidence in God’s Triumph over Evil

1 Why do You stand afar off, O Lord?
Why do You hide in times of trouble?
2 The wicked in his pride1 persecutes the poor;
aLet them be caught in the plots which they have devised.
3 For the wicked aboasts of his heart’s desire;
He bblesses the greedy and renounces the Lord.
4 The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God;
1God is in none of his athoughts.
5 His ways1 are always prospering;
Your judgments are far above, out of his sight;
As for all his enemies, he sneers at them.
6 aHe has said in his heart, “I shall not be moved;
bI shall never be in adversity.”

What Does Psalms 10:1 Mean?

Psalm 10:1

The psalm begins with a question. The psalmist has evidently been observing something in life, and he is quite bothered about it. Perhaps he has been praying and thinking about it for quite a long time. What has been bothering him is: Why do proud, evil people prosper? Why does not God take action? Why do they seem to receive the good things of life? The benefit we get from the psalmist's musings and meditations is instruction on the way the proud act.
