The Lord the Shepherd of His People

A Psalm of David.

1 The Lord is amy shepherd;
bI shall not1 want.
2 aHe makes me to lie down in1 green pastures;
bHe leads me beside the1 still waters.
3 He restores my soul;
aHe leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of athe shadow of death,
bI will fear no evil;
cFor You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
5 You aprepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You banoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will1 dwell in the house of the Lord
1Forever.

Psalm 23:1-6

We need to read this with that in mind, with the optimism of joy and hope and faith and love. And I think that is how he wrote it. He writes as a sheep, content, at peace, and whole. And he is that way because the Lord is his shepherd. I will try to read it like this.

He was happy. He loved his life as a sheep of the Lord. He was content because God was with him.

You can see that in coming to know the Lord that David felt he had an ironclad guarantee that the abundant life and eternal life are his if he just follows the Lord, his Shepherd. Whatever happened, God would work it out.
