So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.
18 aWhoever1 keeps the fig tree will eat its fruit;
So he who waits on his master will be honored.
19 As in water face reflects face,
So a man’s heart reveals the man.
20 aHell1 and Destruction are never full;
So bthe eyes of man are never satisfied.
21 aThe refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold,

Proverbs 27:19

Solomon here is comparing our heart to smooth water or a mirror that literally reflects an image back and out to God, and out to each other. In I Samuel 16:7, we read, “For the Lord does not see as a man sees, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Psalm 139:23-24 reads, “Search me, O God, and know my heart and see if there is any wicked way in me.”
