Compare all
4 aDraw me away!
bWe will run after1 you.
The king chas brought me into his chambers.
We will be glad and rejoice in1 you.
We will remember your love more than wine.
Rightly do they love you.

The Daughters of Jerusalem The Shulamite The Daughters of Jerusalem The Shulamite

5 I am dark, but lovely,
O daughters of Jerusalem,
Like the tents of Kedar,
Like the curtains of Solomon.
6 Do not look upon me, because I am dark,
Because the sun has1 tanned me.
My mother’s sons were angry with me;
They made me the keeper of the vineyards,
But my own avineyard I have not kept.

(To Her Beloved)

7 Tell me, O you whom I love,
Where you feed your flock,
Where you make it rest at noon.
For why should I be as one who1 veils herself
By the flocks of your companions?

The Beloved

8 If you do not know, aO fairest among women,
1Follow in the footsteps of the flock,
And feed your little goats
Beside the shepherds’ tents.
9 I have compared you, amy love,
bTo my filly among Pharaoh’s chariots.
10 aYour cheeks are lovely with ornaments,
Your neck with chains of gold.

The Daughters of Jerusalem

11 We will make1 you ornaments of gold
With studs of silver.

American Standard Version
Look not upon me, because I am swarthy, Because the sun hath scorched me. My mother's sons were incensed against me; They made me keeper of the vineyards; `But' mine own vineyard have I not kept.

Amplified® Bible
[Please] do not look at me, [she said, for] I am swarthy. [I have worked out] in the sun {and} it has left its mark upon me. My stepbrothers were angry with me, and they made me keeper of the vineyards; but my own vineyard [my complexion] I have not kept.

Contemporary English Version

Darby English Version
Look not upon me, because I am black; Because the sun hath looked upon me. My mother's children were angry with me: They made me keeper of the vineyards; Mine own vineyard have I not kept.

Good News Bible
Don't look down on me because of my color, because the sun has tanned me. My brothers were angry with me and made me work in the vineyard. I had no time to care for myself.

King James Version
Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother's children were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but mine own vineyard have I not kept.

and made me take care of the vineyards;
my own vineyard I have neglected.

Because the sun has tanned me.
