Isaiah 43:24
Compare all

Pleading with Unfaithful Israel

22 “But you have not called upon Me, O Jacob;
And you ahave been weary of Me, O Israel.
23 aYou have not brought Me the sheep for your burnt offerings,
Nor have you honored Me with your sacrifices.
I have not caused you to serve with grain offerings,
Nor wearied you with incense.
24 You have bought Me no sweet cane with money,
Nor have you satisfied Me with the fat of your sacrifices;
But you have burdened Me with your sins,
You have awearied Me with your iniquities.
25 “I, even I, am He who ablots out your transgressions bfor My own sake;
cAnd I will not remember your sins.
26 Put Me in remembrance;
Let us contend together;
State your case, that you may be1 acquitted.
27 Your first father sinned,
And your1 mediators have transgressed against Me.
28 Therefore I will profane the princes of the sanctuary;
aI will give Jacob to the curse,
And Israel to reproaches.

Isaiah 43:24

bought—for "sweet cane" (aromatic calamus) was not indigenous to Palestine, but had to be bought from foreign countries (Jeremiah 6:20). It was used among the Hebrews to make the sacred ointment (Exodus 30:23). It is often offered as a mark of hospitality.

filled—satiated (Jeremiah 31:14). God deigns to use human language to adapt Himself to human modes of thought.

made me to serve—though "I have not caused thee to serve" (Isaiah 43:23). Our sin made the Son of God to become "a servant." He served to save us from servile bondage (Philippians 2:7; Hebrews 2:14-15).

wearied me—Though I have "not wearied thee" (Isaiah 43:23; see Isaiah 1:14).
