God’s Case Against Israel

1 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
2 “Go and cry in the hearing of Jerusalem, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord:
“I remember you,
The kindness of your ayouth,
The love of your betrothal,
bWhen you1 went after Me in the wilderness,
In a land not sown.
3 aIsrael was holiness to the Lord,
bThe firstfruits of His increase.
cAll that devour him will offend;
Disaster will dcome upon them,” says the Lord.’ ”
4 Hear the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob and all the families of the house of Israel.
5 Thus says the Lord:
a“What injustice have your fathers found in Me,
That they have gone far from Me,
bHave followed1 idols,
And have become idolaters?
6 Neither did they say, ‘Where is the Lord,
Who abrought us up out of the land of Egypt,
Who led us through bthe wilderness,
Through a land of deserts and pits,
Through a land of drought and the shadow of death,
Through a land that no one crossed
And where no one dwelt?’

Jeremiah 2:3

holiness unto the Lord—that is, was consecrated to the service of Jehovah (Exodus 19:5-6). They thus answered to the motto on their high priest's breastplate, "Holiness to the Lord" (Deuteronomy 7:6; Deuteronomy 14:2, Deuteronomy 14:21).

first-fruits of his increase—that is, of Jehovah's produce. As the first-fruits of the whole produce of the land were devoted to God (Exodus 23:19; Numbers 18:12-13), so Israel was devoted to Him as the first-fruit and representative nation among all nations. So the spiritual Israel (James 1:18; Revelation 14:4).

devour—carrying on the image of first-fruits which were eaten before the Lord by the priests as the Lord's representatives; all who ate (injured) Jehovah's first-fruits (Israel), contracted guilt: for example, Amalek, the Amorites, etc., were extirpated for their guilt towards Israel.

shall come—rather, "came."
