Jeremiah 2:20
Compare all
18 And now why take athe road to Egypt,
To drink the waters of1 bSihor?
Or why take the road to cAssyria,
To drink the waters of the River?
19 Your own wickedness will acorrect you,
And your backslidings will rebuke you.
Know therefore and see that it is an evil and bitter thing
That you have forsaken the Lord your God,
And the1 fear of Me is not in you,”
Says the Lord God of hosts.
20 “For of old I have abroken your yoke and burst your bonds;
And byou said, ‘I will not transgress,’
When con every high hill and under every green tree
You lay down, dplaying the harlot.
21 Yet I had aplanted you a noble vine, a seed of highest quality.
How then have you turned before Me
Into bthe degenerate plant of an alien vine?
22 For though you wash yourself with lye, and use much soap,
Yet your iniquity is amarked before Me,” says the Lord God.
23 “Howa can you say, ‘I am not polluted,
I have not gone after the Baals’?
See your way in the valley;
Know what you have done:
You are a swift dromedary breaking loose in her ways,
24 A wild donkey used to the wilderness,
That sniffs at the wind in her desire;
In her time of mating, who can turn her away?
All those who seek her will not weary themselves;
In her month they will find her.

Jeremiah 2:20

I—the Hebrew should be pointed as the second person feminine, a form common in Jeremiah: "Thou hast broken," etc. So the Septuagint, and the sense requires it.

thy yoke . . . bands—the yoke and bands which I laid on thee, My laws (Jeremiah 5:5).

transgress—so the Keri, and many manuscripts read. But the Septuagint and most authorities read, "I will not serve," that is, obey. The sense of English Version is, "I broke thy yoke (in Egypt)," etc., "and (at that time) thou saidst, I will not transgress; whereas thou hast (since then) wandered (from Me)" (Exodus 19:8).

hill . . . green tree—the scene of idolatries (Deuteronomy 12:2; Isaiah 57:5, Isaiah 57:7).

wanderest—rather, "thou hast bowed down thyself" (for the act of adultery: figurative of shameless idolatry, Exodus 34:15-16; compare Job 31:10).
