Jeremiah 46:21
Compare all
19 O ayou daughter dwelling in Egypt,
Prepare yourself bto go into captivity!
For1 Noph shall be waste and desolate, without inhabitant.
20 “Egypt is a very pretty aheifer,
But destruction comes, it comes bfrom the north.
21 Also her mercenaries are in her midst like1 fat bulls,
For they also are turned back,
They have fled away together.
They did not stand,
For athe day of their calamity had come upon them,
The time of their punishment.
22 aHer noise shall go like a serpent,
For they shall march with an army
And come against her with axes,
Like those who chop wood.
23 “They shall acut down her forest,” says the Lord,
“Though it cannot be searched,
Because they are innumerable,
And more numerous than bgrasshoppers.
24 The daughter of Egypt shall be ashamed;
She shall be delivered into the hand
Of athe people of the north.”
25 The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, says: “Behold, I will bring punishment on1 Amon of aNo, and Pharaoh and Egypt, bwith their gods and their kings—Pharaoh and those who ctrust in him.
26 aAnd I will deliver them into the hand of those who seek their lives, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and the hand of his servants. bAfterward it shall be inhabited as in the days of old,” says the Lord.

God Will Preserve Israel

27 “Buta do not fear, O My servant Jacob,
And do not be dismayed, O Israel!
For behold, I will bsave you from afar,
And your offspring from the land of their captivity;
Jacob shall return, have rest and be at ease;
No one shall make him afraid.

Jeremiah 46:21

Translate, "Also her hired men (mercenary soldiers, Jeremiah 46:9, Jeremiah 46:16), who are in the midst of her like fatted bullocks, even they also are turned back," that is, shall turn their backs to flee. The same image, "heifer . . . bullocks" (Jeremiah 46:20-21), is applied to Egypt's foreign mercenaries, as to herself. Pampered with the luxuries of Egypt, they become as enervated for battle as the natives themselves.

Jeremiah 46:13-26

Prophecy of the invasion of Egypt by Nebuchadnezzar, which took place sixteen years after the taking of Jerusalem. Having spent thirteen years in the siege of Tyre, and having obtained nothing for his pains, he is promised by God Egypt for his reward in humbling Tyre (Ezekiel 29:17-20; Eze. 30:1-31:18). The intestine commotions between Amasis and Pharaoh-hophra prepared his way (compare Note, see on Isaiah 19:1, etc.).
