Jeremiah 49:19
Compare all
17 “Edom also shall be an astonishment;
aEveryone who goes by it will be astonished
And will hiss at all its plagues.
18 aAs in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah
And their neighbors,” says the Lord,
“No one shall remain there,
Nor shall a son of man dwell in it.
19 “Behold,a he shall come up like a lion from bthe floodplain of the Jordan
Against the dwelling place of the strong;
But I will suddenly make him run away from her.
And who is a chosen man that I may appoint over her?
For cwho is like Me?
Who will arraign Me?
And dwho is that shepherd
Who will withstand Me?”
20 aTherefore hear the counsel of the Lord that He has taken against Edom,
And His purposes that He has proposed against the inhabitants of Teman:
Surely the least of the flock shall1 draw them out;
Surely He shall make their dwelling places desolate with them.
21 aThe earth shakes at the noise of their fall;
At the cry its noise is heard at the Red Sea.
22 Behold, aHe shall come up and fly like the eagle,
And spread His wings over Bozrah;
The heart of the mighty men of Edom in that day shall be
Like the heart of a woman in birth pangs.

Judgment on Damascus

23 aAgainst Damascus.
b“Hamath and Arpad are shamed,
For they have heard bad news.
They are fainthearted;
cThere is1 trouble on the sea;
It cannot be quiet.

<< Jeremiah 49:18   Jeremiah 49:20 >>

American Standard Version
Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the pride of the Jordan against the strong habitation: for I will suddenly make them run away from it; and whoso is chosen, him will I appoint over it: for who is like me? and who will appoint me a time? and who is the shepherd that will stand before me?

Amplified® Bible
See, there comes up one [Nebuchadnezzar] like a lion from [lurking in] the jungles (the pride) of the Jordan against the strong habitation [of Edom] {and} into the permanent pastures; for in a twinkling I will drive him [Edom] from there. And I will appoint over him the one whom I choose. For who is like Me? And who will appoint for Me the time {and} prosecute Me for this proceeding? And what [earthly, national] shepherd can stand before Me {and} defy Me?

Contemporary English Version
I will attack you like a lion from the forest, attacking sheep in a meadow along the Jordan. In a moment the flock runs, and the land is empty. Who will I choose to attack you? I will do it myself! No one can force me to fight or chase me away.

Darby English Version
Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of the Jordan against the strong habitation; for I will make them suddenly run away from it; and who is a chosen [man] whom I shall appoint over her? For who is like me? and who will assign me a time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me?

Good News Bible
Like a lion coming out of the thick woods along the Jordan River up to the green pasture land, I will come and make the Edomites run away suddenly from their country. Then the leader I choose will rule the nation. Who can be compared to me? Who would dare challenge me? What ruler could oppose me?

King James Version
Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan against the habitation of the strong: but I will suddenly make him run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me?

New American Standard Bible
"Behold, one will come up like a lion from the thickets of the Jordan against a perennially watered pasture; for in an instant I will make him run away from it, and whoever is chosen I shall appoint over it. For who is like Me, and who will summon Me {into court?} And who then is the shepherd who can stand against Me?"

New International Version
"Like a lion coming up from Jordan's thickets
to a rich pastureland,
I will chase Edom from its land in an instant.
Who is the chosen one I will appoint for this?
Who is like me and who can challenge me?
And what shepherd can stand against me?"

New King James Version
“ Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the floodplain of the Jordan
Against the dwelling place of the strong;
But I will suddenly make him run away from her.
And who is a chosen man that I may appoint over her?
For who is like Me?
Who will arraign Me?
And who is that shepherd
Who will withstand Me?”

N.A.S.B. in E-Prime
" Behold, one will come up like a lion from the thickets of the Jordan against a perennially watered pasture; for in an instant I will make him run away from it, and whoever people choose I shall appoint over it For who compares to Me, and who will summon Me into court? And who then serves as the shepherd who can stand against Me?"

Revised Standard Version
Behold, like a lion coming up from the jungle of the Jordan against a strong sheepfold, I will suddenly make them run away from her; and I will appoint over her whomever I choose. For who is like me? Who will summon me? What shepherd can stand before me?

Young's Literal Translation
Lo, as a lion he cometh up, Because of the rising of the Jordan, Unto the enduring habitation, But I cause to rest, I cause him to run from off her, And who is chosen? concerning her I lay a charge, For who is like Me? and who conveneth Me? And who `is' this shepherd who standeth before Me?

New English Translation
“A lion coming up from the thick undergrowth along the Jordan1 scatters the sheep in the pastureland around it.2 So too I will chase the Edomites off their land.3 Then I will appoint over it whomever I choose.4 For there is no one like me, and there is no one who can call me to account.5 There is no6 ruler7 who can stand up against me.
