The Ten Commandments

1 And God spoke aall these words, saying:
2 a“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, bout of the house of bondage.
3 a“You shall have no other gods before Me.
4 a“You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;
5 ayou shall not bow down to them nor1 serve them. bFor I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, cvisiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,
6 but ashowing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
7 a“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord bwill not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

Exodus 20:1

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. (Exo. 20:1-26)

And God spake all these words—The Divine Being Himself was the speaker (Deuteronomy 5:12, Deuteronomy 5:32-33), in tones so loud as to be heard—so distinct as to be intelligible by the whole multitude standing in the valleys below, amid the most appalling phenomena of agitated nature. Had He been simply addressing rational and intelligent creatures, He would have spoken with the still small voice of persuasion and love. But He was speaking to those who were at the same time fallen and sinful creatures, and a corresponding change was required in the manner of God's procedure, in order to give a suitable impression of the character and sanctions of the law revealed from heaven (Romans 11:5-9).
