The Watchman and His Message

1 Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
2 “Son of man, speak to athe children of your people, and say to them: b‘When I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from their territory and make him their cwatchman,
3 when he sees the sword coming upon the land, if he blows the trumpet and warns the people,
4 then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet and does anot take warning, if the sword comes and takes him away, bhis blood shall be on his own head.
5 He heard the sound of the trumpet, but did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But he who takes warning will1 save his life.
6 But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, and the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any person from among them, ahe is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.’
7 a“So you, son of man: I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore you shall hear a word from My mouth and warn them for Me.
8 When I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you shall surely die!’ and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand.
9 Nevertheless if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have1 delivered your soul.
10 “Therefore you, O son of man, say to the house of Israel: ‘Thus you say, “If our transgressions and our sins lie upon us, and we apine away in them, bhow can we then live?” ’
11 Say to them: ‘As I live,’ says the Lord God, a‘I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked bturn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For cwhy should you die, O house of Israel?’

Ezekiel 33:2

RENEWAL OF EZEKIEL'S COMMISSION, NOW THAT HE IS AGAIN TO ADDRESS HIS COUNTRYMEN, AND IN A NEW TONE. (Eze. 33:1-33)

to the children of thy people—whom he had been forbidden to address from Ezekiel 24:26-27, till Jerusalem was overthrown, and the "escaped" came with tidings of the judgment being completed. So now, in Ezekiel 33:21, the tidings of the fact having arrived, he opens his heretofore closed lips to the Jews. In the interval he had prophesied as to foreign nations. The former part of the chapter, at Eze. 33:2-20, seems to have been imparted to Ezekiel on the evening previous (Ezekiel 33:22), being a preparation for the latter part (Ezekiel 33:23-33) imparted after the tidings had come. This accounts for the first part standing without intimation of the date, which was properly reserved for the latter part, to which the former was the anticipatory introduction [FAIRBAIRN].

watchman— Ezekiel 33:1-9 exhibit Ezekiel's office as a spiritual watchman; so in Ezekiel 3:16-21; only here the duties of the earthly watchman (compare II Samuel 18:24-25; II Kings 9:17) are detailed first, and then the application is made to the spiritual watchman's duty (compare Isaiah 21:6-10; Hosea 9:8; Habakkuk 2:1). "A man of their coasts" is a man specially chosen for the office out of their whole number. So Judges 18:2, "five men from their coasts"; also the Hebrew of Genesis 47:2; implying the care needed in the choice of the watchman, the spiritual as well as the temporal (Acts 1:21-22, Acts 1:24-26; I Timothy 5:22).
