Gog and Allies Attack Israel

1 Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
2 a“Son of man, bset your face against cGog, of the land of dMagog, the prince of Rosh, eMeshech, and Tubal, and prophesy against him,
3 and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against you, O Gog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal.
4 aI will turn you around, put hooks into your jaws, and blead you out, with all your army, horses, and horsemen, call splendidly clothed, a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords.
5 Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya are with them, all of them with shield and helmet;
6 aGomer and all its troops; the house of bTogarmah from the far north and all its troops—many people are with you.
7 a“Prepare yourself and be ready, you and all your companies that are gathered about you; and be a guard for them.
8 aAfter many days byou will be visited. In the latter years you will come into the land of those brought back from the sword cand gathered from many people on dthe mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate; they were brought out of the nations, and now all of them edwell safely.
9 You will ascend, coming alike a storm, covering the bland like a cloud, you and all your troops and many peoples with you.”
10 ‘Thus says the Lord God: “On that day it shall come to pass that thoughts will arise in your mind, and you will make an evil plan:
11 You will say, ‘I will go up against a land of aunwalled villages; I will bgo to a peaceful people, cwho dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates’—
12 to take plunder and to take booty, to stretch out your hand against the waste places that are again inhabited, aand against a people gathered from the nations, who have acquired livestock and goods, who dwell in the midst of the land.
13 aSheba, bDedan, the merchants cof Tarshish, and all dtheir young lions will say to you, ‘Have you come to take plunder? Have you gathered your army to take booty, to carry away silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods, to take great plunder?’ ” ’
14 “Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say to Gog, ‘Thus says the Lord God: a“On that day when My people Israel bdwell safely, will you not know it?
15 aThen you will come from your place out of the far north, you and many peoples with you, all of them riding on horses, a great company and a mighty army.

Ezekiel 38:1

The last conflict of the world with God, and the complete overthrow of the former. This section Eze. 38-39 refers to times subsequent to the restoration of Israel. As the Church (the true Israel) waxes stronger and stronger, more distant nations will come into collision and must be overthrown before the triumph is complete. Some have thought that this prophecy is directed against the Scythians who had possession of Asia twenty-three years, and in the course of this time had overrun Syria, and had probably made their appearance in the holy land. But in this prophecy there is little distinctive of one nation. It is a gathering together of the enemies of Yahweh to make their last effort, and to be overthrown. The seer passes to the final struggle between Good and Evil, and the triumphant establishment of the divine rule. It is the same struggle which is depicted in the Book of Revelation Ezekiel 20:7-10, where John adopts words and phrases of Ezekiel.

There are four main divisions of this prophecy:

(1) Ezekiel 38:1-13, describing Gog' s march;

(2) Ezekiel 38:14-23, describing his punishment;

(3) Ezek. 39:1-16, describing his ruin;

(4) Ezekiel 39:17-29, the issue of Gog' s ruin in Israel' s redemption and sanctification.

Each division is broken up like a poem into stanzas.
