God’s Continuing Love for Israel

1 “When Israel was a1 child, I loved him,
And out of Egypt aI called My bson. 
2 1As they called them,
So they awent from them;
They sacrificed to the Baals,
And burned incense to carved images. 
3 “Ia taught Ephraim to walk,
Taking them by1 their arms;
But they did not know that bI healed them. 
4 I drew them with1 gentle cords,
With bands of love,
And aI was to them as those who take the yoke from their1 neck.
bI stooped and fed them. 
5 “He shall not return to the land of Egypt;
But the Assyrian shall be his king,
Because they refused to repent.
6 And the sword shall slash in his cities,
Devour his districts,
And consume them,
Because of their own counsels.

What Does Hosea 11:1 Mean?



Hosea 11:1

This foretells of Joseph and Mary being warned by an angel to take the newly born Jesus to Egypt to avoid the cruelty of King Herod, and once Herod died, the family returned to live in Nazareth (see Matthew 2:12-23).

Hosea 11:1

A short while after Jesus is born, God warns Joseph in a dream to leave immediately for Egypt to escape persecution from Herod the Great (Matthew 2:13). Once Herod dies, Joseph, Mary, and Jesus return to Judea (verses 15, 19-21), fulfilling the prophecy of Hosea 11:1, "Out of Egypt I called My Son."

This recalls God's redemption of Israel from bondage, suggesting the later work of Jesus as Redeemer of all mankind. Paul encourages Titus by saying that Christ "gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people" (Titus 2:14).
