Shall be wailing in that day,”
Says the Lord God—
“Many dead bodies everywhere,
bThey shall be thrown out in silence.”
And make the poor of the land fail,
“When will the New Moon be past,
That we may1 sell grain?
And athe Sabbath,
That we may trade wheat?
bMaking the ephah small and the shekel large,
Falsifying the scales by cdeceit,
And the needy for a pair of sandals—
Even sell the bad wheat?”
And everyone mourn who dwells in it?
All of it shall swell like1 the River,
Heave and subside
bLike the River of Egypt.
a“That I will make the sun go down at noon,
And I will darken the earth in1 broad daylight;
bAnd all your songs into lamentation;
cI will bring sackcloth on every waist,
And baldness on every head;
I will make it like mourning for an only son,
And its end like a bitter day.
“That I will send a famine on the land,
Not a famine of bread,
Nor a thirst for water,
But aof hearing the words of the Lord.
And from north to east;
They shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the Lord,
But shall anot find it.
Who say,
‘As your god lives, O Dan!’
And, ‘As the way of cBeersheba lives!’
They shall fall and never rise again.”

Amos 8:5
When - Ye that could wish there were nothing to interrupt your marketing, that look on solemn times of worship as burdensome, such was the first day of every month, and the weekly sabbath. Small - So the ephah being too little, the poor buyer had not his due. The shekel great - They weighed the money which they received, and had no more justice, than to make their shekel weight greater than the standard; so the poor were twice oppressed, had less than was their right, and paid more than they ought to pay.
