Micah 5:3
Compare all
1 Now gather yourself in troops,
O daughter of troops;
He has laid siege against us;
They will astrike the judge of Israel with a rod on the cheek.

The Coming Messiah

2 “But you, aBethlehem bEphrathah,
Though you are little camong the dthousands of Judah,
Yet out of you shall come forth to Me
The One to be eRuler in Israel,
fWhose goings forth are from1 of old,
From everlasting.”
3 Therefore He shall give them up,
Until the time that ashe who is in labor has given birth;
Then bthe remnant of His brethren
Shall return to the children of Israel.
4 And He shall stand and afeed His flock
In the strength of the Lord,
In the majesty of the name of the Lord His God;
And they shall abide,
For now He bshall be great
To the ends of the earth;
5 And this One ashall be peace.
When the Assyrian comes into our land,
And when he treads in our palaces,
Then we will raise against him
Seven shepherds and eight princely men.

Judgment on Israel’s Enemies

6 They shall1 waste with the sword the land of Assyria,
And the land of aNimrod at its entrances;
Thus He shall bdeliver us from the Assyrian,
When he comes into our land
And when he treads within our borders.
7 Then athe remnant of Jacob
Shall be in the midst of many peoples,
bLike dew from the Lord,
Like showers on the grass,
That1 tarry for no man
Nor1 wait for the sons of men.
8 And the remnant of Jacob
Shall be among the Gentiles,
In the midst of many peoples,
Like a alion among the beasts of the forest,
Like a young lion among flocks of sheep,
Who, if he passes through,
Both treads down and tears in pieces,
And none can deliver.
9 Your hand shall be lifted against your adversaries,
And all your enemies shall be1 cut off.
10 “And it shall be in that day,” says the Lord,
“That I will acut off your bhorses from your midst
And destroy your cchariots.
11 I will cut off the cities of your land
And throw down all your strongholds.
12 I will cut off sorceries from your hand,
And you shall have no asoothsayers.
13 aYour carved images I will also cut off,
And your sacred pillars from your midst;
You shall bno more worship the work of your hands;

Micah 5:3

"Therefore (because of His settled plan) will God give up to their foes His people Israel, until," etc.

she which travaileth hath brought forth—namely, "the virgin" mother, mentioned by Micah's contemporary, Isaiah 7:14. Zion "in travail" (Micah 4:9-10) answers to the virgin in travail of Messiah. Israel's deliverance from her long travail-pains of sorrow will synchronize with the appearance oœ Messiah as her Redeemer (Romans 11:26) in the last days, as the Church's spiritual deliverance synchronized with the virgin's giving birth to Him at His first advent. The ancient Church's travail-like waiting for Messiah is represented by the virgin's travail. Hence, both may be meant. It cannot be restricted to the Virgin Mary: for Israel is still "given up," though Messiah has been "brought forth" almost two thousand years ago. But the Church's throes are included, which are only to be ended when Christ, having been preached for a witness to all nations, shall at last appear as the Deliverer of Jacob, and when the times of the Gentiles shall be fulfilled, and Israel as a nation shall be born in a day (Isaiah 66:7-11; Luke 21:24; Revelation 12:1-2, Revelation 12:4; compare Romans 8:22).

the remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel—(Compare Micah 4:7). The remainder of the Israelites dispersed in foreign lands shall return to join their countrymen in Canaan. The Hebrew for "unto" is, literally, "upon," implying superaddition to those already gathered.
