41 Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the¹ scribes and elders, said,

42 “He ^asaved others; Himself He cannot save.¹ If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe² Him.

43 ^aHe trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ”

44 ^aEven the robbers who were crucified with Him reviled Him with the same thing.

45 ^aNow from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land.

46 And about the ninth hour ^aJesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, ^b“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

Let him deliver him now (rusasqw nun). They add the word "now" to Psa. 21; Psalms 22:8. That is the point of the sneer at Christ's claim to be God's son thrown in his teeth again and at the willingness and power of God to help his "son." The verb qelw here may mean

love as in the Septuagint (Psalms 18:20; Psalms 41:12) or "cares for" (Moffatt), "gin he cares ocht for him" (Braid Scots).
