Exodus 32:15
Compare all
13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants, to whom You aswore by Your own self, and said to them, b‘I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven; and all this land that I have spoken of I give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.’ ”
14 So the Lord arelented from the harm which He said He would do to His people.
15 And aMoses turned and went down from the mountain, and the two tablets of the Testimony were in his hand. The tablets were written on both sides; on the one side and on the other they were written.
16 Now the atablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God engraved on the tablets.
17 And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, “There is a noise of war in the camp.”
18 But he said:
“It is not the noise of the shout of victory,
Nor the noise of the cry of defeat,
But the sound of singing I hear.”

Exodus 32:15-16

Notice the hints that God gives us here that Moses’ thinking was not quite in line with His. This is a man that was prepared for a long time, but he was still not finished. In verse 7, God says, “Get down! For your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt have corrupted themselves.” Knowing Moses as well as He did, He knew what would happen. He lost his temper, as he had forty years before when he took it upon himself to kill the Egyptian for beating a Hebrew. Only this time in a fit of anger he smashed the two tablets that were the work of God, with the writing that was written by God, as we are reminded in verse 16.

Exodus 32:15-16

Even the selection of doing this on stone, as well as having God Himself doing the writing, is symbolic of the eternal and enduring character of what was written on those stones.
