70 But he denied it again. aAnd a little later those who stood by said to Peter again, “Surely you are one of them; bfor you are a Galilean, and your2 speech shows it.”
71 Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this Man of whom you speak!”
72 aA second time the rooster crowed. Then Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And when he thought about it, he wept.

Mark 14:71

Curse (anaqematizein). Our word anathema (ana, qema, an offering, then something devoted or a curse). Finally the two meanings were distinguished by anaqhma for offering and anaqema for curse. Deissmann has found examples at Megara of anaqema in the sense of curse. Hence the distinction observed in the N.T. was already in the Koin‚. Matthew 26:74 has kataqematizein, which is a apac legomenon in the N.T., though common in the LXX. This word has the notion of calling down curses on one's self if the thing is not true.
