50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not forbid him, for ^ahe who is not against us is on² our side.”

A Samaritan Village Rejects the Savior

51 Now it came to pass, when the time had come for ^aHim to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem,

52 and sent messengers before His face. And as they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him.

53 But ^athey did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem.

54 And when His disciples ^aJames and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them,¹ just as ^bElijah did?”

55 But He turned and rebuked them,¹ and said, “You do not know what manner of ^aspirit you are of.

56 For ^athe Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” And they went to another village.

Sent messengers (apesteilen aggelouv). As a precaution since he was going to Jerusalem through Samaria. The Samaritans did not object when people went north from Jerusalem through their country. He was repudiating Mount Gerizim by going by it to Jerusalem. This was an unusual precaution by Jesus and we do not know who the messengers (

angels) were.

To make ready for him (wv etoimasai autw). wv is correct here, not wste. The only examples of the final use of wv with the infinitive in the N.T. are this one and Hebrews 7:9 (absolute use). In Acts 20:24 Westcott and Hort read wv teleiwsw and put wv teleiwsai in the margin (Robertson, Grammar, p. 1091).
