Luke 12:49
Compare all
47 And athat servant who bknew his master’s will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.
48 aBut he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.

Christ Brings Division

49 a“I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!
50 But aI have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am till it is baccomplished!
51 aDo you suppose that I came to give peace on earth? I tell you, not at all, bbut rather division.
52 aFor from now on five in one house will be divided: three against two, and two against three.
53 aFather will be divided against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”

Discern the Time

54 Then He also said to the multitudes, a“Whenever you see a cloud rising out of the west, immediately you say, ‘A shower is coming’; and so it is.
55 And when you see the asouth wind blow, you say, ‘There will be hot weather’; and there is.

Luke 12:49

I am come to send fire - See this subject largely explained on Matthew 10:34 (note), etc. From the connection in which these words stand, both in this place and in Matthew, it appears as if our Lord intended by the word fire, not only the consuming influence of the Roman sword, but also the influence of his own Spirit in the destruction of sin. In both these senses this fire was already kindled: as yet, however, it appeared but as a spark, but was soon to break out into an all-consuming flame.
