Genesis 1:26
Compare all
24 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind”; and it was so.
25 And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
26 Then God said, a“Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; blet them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over1 all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
27 So God created man ain His own image; in the image of God He created him; bmale and female He created them.
28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, a“Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and bsubdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that1 moves on the earth.”
29 And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; ato you it shall be for food.
30 Also, to aevery beast of the earth, to every bbird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is1 life, I have given every green herb for food”; and it was so.

Articles, Bible studies, and sermons that contain Genesis 1:26:

Genesis 1:26-28

Now, if we were going to expand that, or amplify it in the English, it would read somewhat like this: The God, as to His nature, is love. What it means, then, is God is a loving God. Most of the gods in the ancient world, in Greek mythology, were wrathful, vengeful, angry, picky things who had the same foibles, the same weaknesses, as human beings. They were not 'loving' gods. But the God is a loving God. So it is not to be understood that loving is one of God's activities; but rather that every activity of God is 'loving'. Therefore, if He creates, He creates in love. If He rules, He rules in love. If He judges, He judges in love. All that He does is an expression of His nature.

Now, let us think about this in reference to man. We are still talking about how God is the source of this love, and man, by nature, does not have it. Man was made in the image and the likeness of God (Genesis 1:26-28). But, God is described as being spirit. God is Spirit (John 4:24). And we find here that God is love. Now contrast that to man. Man is flesh. You see, the image begins to change. We are not quite in the image of God, are we?

Not only that, but the Bible describes us as being carnal. In this case, I am using it in the sense of being fleshly or physical. We are self-centered, and we are deceitful. What this means in practical fact is that man cannot be what he is meant to be - in the image of God - until he loves as God loves. Until his nature is the same as God's, we will never really be in the image of God. This is the essential thing that must be changed in man. Of course, you understand that, because of receiving of the Spirit of God, we are now partakers of the divine nature, which Peter states there in one of his epistles.

So, if man is to achieve what he is meant to be, then we must love, but we must love with the love of God.

Genesis 1:26-29

Going forward, I would like us to keep in mind not only that God had determined to make man in His very image and likeness at some point before this, but He had created us to be like Him, productive and fruitful in continuing to enhance every aspect of His creation.

Please keep Genesis 1:29 in your minds throughout this sermon because God gives us a clue right from the beginning of how He expects us to learn His way of creation as opposed to this current world's way of destruction. God tells us, "See, I have given you every herb that yields its seed which is on the face of the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed." Just a clue, but it directly points to the way God's creation should work when in line with Him. It does not destroy what has been set in place by Him, but should produce more.

Genesis 1:26-28

This chapter reveals God's creation and then specifically speaks to what They had in mind for mankind, that man created in God's image would be fruitful and multiply. We understand in this one scripture that God is showing us that He is creating a family that is like Them. (I think that was in today's Berean or yesterday's Berean.)
