The New Birth

1 There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
2 aThis man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for bno one can do these signs that You do unless cGod is with him.”
3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, aunless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, aunless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is aflesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
8 aThe wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

John 3:2

came to Jesus by night—One of those superficial "believers" mentioned in John 2:23-24, yet inwardly craving further satisfaction, Nicodemus comes to Jesus in quest of it, but comes "by night" (see John 19:38-39; John 12:42); he avows his conviction that He was

come from God—an expression never applied to a merely human messenger, and probably meaning more here—but only as "a teacher," and in His miracles he sees a proof merely that "God is with Him." Thus, while unable to repress his convictions, he is afraid of committing himself too far.

John 3:1-2

NIGHT INTERVIEW OF NICODEMUS WITH JESUS. (John 3:1-21)

Nicodemus—In this member of the Sanhedrim sincerity and timidity are seen struggling together.
