John 5:37
Compare all
35 He was the burning and ashining lamp, and byou were willing for a time to rejoice in his light.
36 But aI have a greater witness than John’s; for bthe works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very cworks that I do—bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me.
37 And the Father Himself, who sent Me, ahas testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, bnor seen His form.
38 But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe.
39 aYou search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and bthese are they which testify of Me.
40 aBut you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.
41 a“I do not receive honor from men.
42 But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you.
43 I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive.
44 aHow can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek bthe honor that comes from the only God?
45 Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; athere is one who accuses you—Moses, in whom you trust.

John 5:37

He hath borne witness (ekeinov memarturhken). Ekeinov (that one; cf. John 5:35, John 5:38), not autov. Perfect active indicative of marturew, the direct witness of the Father, besides the indirect witness of the works. Jesus is not speaking of the voice of the Father at his baptism (Mark 1:11), the transfiguration (Mark 9:7), nor even at the time of the visit of the Greeks (John 12:28). This last voice was heard by many who thought it was thunder or an angel. The language of Jesus refers to the witness of the Father in the heart of the believers as is made plain in I John 5:9-10. God's witness does not come by audible "voice" (fwnhn) nor visible "form" (eidov). Cf. John 1:18; John 6:46; I John 4:12. Akhkoate is perfect active indicative of akouw, to hear, and ewrakate is perfect active indicative of oraw, to see. It is a permanent state of failure to hear and see God. The experience of Jacob in Peniel (Genesis 32:30) was unusual, but Jesus will say that those who have seen him have seen the Father (John 14:9), but here he means the Father's "voice" and "form" as distinct from the Son.
