18 ^aHe who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who ^bseeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and ^cno unrighteousness is in Him.

19 ^aDid not Moses give you the law, yet none of you keeps the law? ^bWhy do you seek to kill Me?”

20 The people answered and said, ^a“You have a demon. Who is seeking to kill You?”

21 Jesus answered and said to them, “I did one work, and you all marvel.

22 ^aMoses therefore gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, ^bbut from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.

23 If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with Me because ^aI made a man completely well on the Sabbath?

24 ^aDo not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”

Could This Be the Christ?

25 Now some of them from Jerusalem said, “Is this not He whom they seek to ^akill?

26 But look! He speaks boldly, and they say nothing to Him. ^aDo the rulers know indeed that this is¹ truly the Christ?

The multitude (o oxlov). Outside of Jerusalem (the Galilean crowd as in verses John 7:11 f.) and so unfamiliar with the effort to kill Jesus recorded in John 5:18. It is important in this chapter to distinguish clearly the several groups like the Jewish leaders (John 7:13, John 7:15, John 7:25-26, John 7:30, John 7:32, etc.), the multitude from Galilee and elsewhere (John 7:10-13, John 7:20, John 7:31, John 7:40, John 7:49), the common people of Jerusalem (John 7:25), the Roman soldiers (John 7:45 f.).

Thou hast a devil (daimonion exeiv). "Demon," of course, as always in the Gospels. These pilgrims make the same charge against Jesus made long ago by the Pharisees in Jerusalem in explanation of the difference between John and Jesus (Matthew 11:18; Luke 7:33). It is an easy way to make a fling like that. "He is a monomaniac labouring under a hallucination that people wish to kill him" (Dods).
