36While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become asons of light.” These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and bwas hidden from them.
Who Has Believed Our Report?
37 But although He had done so many asigns before them, they did not believe in Him,
38 that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke: a“Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
39 Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again:
40 “Hea has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, bLest they should see with their eyes, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.”
41aThese things Isaiah said when he saw His glory and spoke of Him.
Walk in the Light
42 Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but abecause of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue;
43afor they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
That might be fulfilled (ina plhrwqh). It is usually assumed that ina here with the first aorist passive subjunctive of plhrow has its full telic force. That is probable as God's design, but it is by no means certain since ina is used in the N.T. with the idea of result, just as ut in Latin is either purpose or result, as in John 6:7; John 9:2; I Thessalonians 5:4; Galatians 5:17; Romans 11:11 (Robertson, Grammar, p. 998). Paul in Romans 10:16 quotes Isaiah 53:1 as John does here but without ina. See Romans 10:16 for discussion of the quotation. The next verse adds strength to the idea of design.
