Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet

1 Now abefore the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that bHis hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He cloved them to the end.  
2 And1 supper being ended, athe devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him,  
3 Jesus, knowing athat the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He bhad come from God and cwas going to God,  
4 arose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself.  
5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.
6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, a“Lord, are You washing my feet?”  
7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you ado not understand now, bbut you will know after this.”  
8 Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, a“If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”  
9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”
10 Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and ayou are clean, but not all of you.”  
11 For aHe knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean.”  
12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you1 know what I have done to you?  
13 aYou call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am.  
14 aIf I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, byou also ought to wash one another’s feet.  
15 For aI have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.  
16 aMost assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him.  
17 aIf you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

John 13:1

Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew, etc. - Or, as some translate, Now Jesus having known, before the feast of the passover, that his hour was come, etc. The supper mentioned in John 13:2 is supposed to have been that on the Thursday evening, when the feast of the passover began; and though, in our common translation, this passage seems to place the supper before that feast, yet, according to the amended translation, what is here said is consistent with what we read in the other evangelists. See Matthew 26:2; John 12:1.

Having loved his own - His disciples.

Which were in the world - Who were to continue longer in its troubles and difficulties.

He loved them unto the end - Continued his fervent affection towards them to his latest breath, and gave them that convincing proof of it which is mentioned John 13:5. That the disciples alone are meant here every man must see.
