John 13:15
Compare all
13 aYou call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am.
14 aIf I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, byou also ought to wash one another’s feet.
15 For aI have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.
16 aMost assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him.
17 aIf you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

Jesus Identifies His Betrayer

18 “I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the aScripture may be fulfilled, b‘He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’
19 aNow I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He.
20 aMost assuredly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”
21 aWhen Jesus had said these things, bHe was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, cone of you will betray Me.”
22 Then the disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom He spoke.
23 Now athere was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved.
24 Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke.
25 Then, leaning1 back on Jesus’ breast, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?”
26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it.” And having dipped the bread, He gave it to aJudas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
27 aNow after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.”
28 But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him.
29 For some thought, because aJudas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, “Buy those things we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor.
30 Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night.

The New Commandment

31 So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, a“Now the Son of Man is glorified, and bGod is glorified in Him.
32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and aglorify Him immediately.
33 Little children, I shall be with you a alittle while longer. You will seek Me; band as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ so now I say to you.
34 aA new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
35 aBy this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

36 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I aam going you cannot follow Me now, but byou shall follow Me afterward.”
37 Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will alay down my life for Your sake.”
38 Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not acrow till you have denied Me three times.

What Does John 13:15 Mean?

John 13:1-17

Jesus teaches self-denial to His disciples not only with His words but also by His actions. Notice that His call to self-denial comes immediately after predicting His own sacrificial death. He is the supreme model of the self-denial to which He calls others. He even denies Himself any urge to avenge Himself or to threaten His persecutors for what they had done to Him. In Jesus' example, we see that, by committing ourselves to God who judges rightly, we deny ourselves the temptation of worldly lusts.

Overcoming (Part 5): Self-Denial

John 13:12-15

The footwashing a commanded ceremony for Christians. It is an object lesson whose meaning we are to inculcate into our lives and practice at every opportunity! As Christ served us, so should we serve others. The apostle John writes in I John 2:6, "He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked."

John 13:12-16

Because of their incessant bickering about who would be the greatest in the Kingdom (Luke 22:24-27), Jesus gave the disciples an object lesson designed to show them what their real position was under Him. He tells them, "He who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves" (verse 26). He shows them that they must be willing to do whatever task—even the most menial—that is necessary for the good of their brothers. This should have put them in the proper attitude for the Passover's greater purpose, Christ's sacrifice for our forgiveness and redemption.

John 13:15

This last statement by Jesus gives us a little insight into His mind. What He says can apply both to earthly relationships of masters and servants as well as to a human's relationship to Christ. We can see in the pages of the gospels that it also describes how Jesus approached His relationship with God the Father. He was always submissive to the Father in everything. Beyond this, God the Father is the greatest servant in the universe. In our behalf, He sustains everything we depend on for our very lives.

Luke probably alludes to the same statement in his account of that Passover evening:

But there was also rivalry among [the disciples], as to which of them should be considered the greatest. And He said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called 'benefactors.' But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves. For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet I am among you as the One who serves." (Luke 22:24-27)

Christ, by His actions, made it very clear that He would not expect anything from us that He was not willing to do Himself. He, as our Governor and Elder Brother, though He should have been served by others, served them. Undoubtedly, service is the essence of godly leadership.
