36 aJesus answered, b“My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.”  
37 Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, athat I should bear bwitness to the truth. Everyone who cis of the truth dhears My voice.”  
38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, a“I find no fault in Him at all.

39 a“But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Do you therefore want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”  
40 aThen they all cried again, saying, “Not this Man, but Barabbas!” bNow Barabbas was a robber.

John 18:37-38

Jesus said that the very reason that He came to the earth was to bear witness, to give testimony on, and to declare truth. He further stated that anyone devoted to truth would listen to Him. That word "listen" means more than just "hear the sound of." It indicates "the use of" as well. The life of the person who is listening to Him would be characterized by submission to truth.

Truth, as it is spoken of in this context, is what we might consider to be ultimate truth—the very things which the life, the death, and the resurrection of Jesus involved. We are talking about the purpose and the plan of God. Another way of saying it is that He is talking about the true knowledge of God.
