Acts 1:13
Compare all
11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, awill so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”

The Upper Room Prayer Meeting

12 aThen they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey.
13 And when they had entered, they went up ainto the upper room where they were staying: bPeter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and cSimon the Zealot; and dJudas the son of James.
14 aThese all continued with one1 accord in prayer and supplication, with bthe women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with cHis brothers.

Matthias Chosen

15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the1 disciples (altogether the number aof names was about a hundred and twenty), and said,
16 “Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, awhich the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, bwho became a guide to those who arrested Jesus;
17 for ahe was numbered with us and obtained a part in bthis ministry.”
18 a(Now this man purchased a field with bthe wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his2 entrails gushed out.
19 And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.)
20 “For it is written in the Book of Psalms:
a‘Let his dwelling place be1 desolate,
And let no one live in it’; and,
b‘Let another take his1 office.’
21 “Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
22 beginning from the baptism of John to that day when aHe was taken up from us, one of these must bbecome a witness with us of His resurrection.”
23 And they proposed two: Joseph called aBarsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
24 And they prayed and said, “You, O Lord, awho know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen
25 ato take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.”
26 And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

Acts 1:13

Into the upper chamber (eiv to uperwon). The upstairs or upper room (uper is upper or over, the adjective uperwov), the room upstairs where the women staid in Homer, then a room up under the flat roof for retirement or prayer (Acts 9:37, Acts 9:39), sometimes a large third story room suitable for gatherings (Acts 20:9). It is possible, even probable, that this is the "large upper room" (anwgeon mega) of Mark 14:15; Luke 22:12. The Vulgate has coenaculum for both words. The word is used in the N.T. only in Acts. It was in a private house as in Luke 22:11 and not in the temple as Luke 24:53 might imply, "continually" (dia pantov) these words probably meaning on proper occasions.

They were abiding (hsan katamenontev). Periphrastic imperfect active. Perfective use of kata, to abide permanently. It is possible that this is the house of Mary the mother of John Mark where the disciples later met for prayer (Acts 12:12). Here alone in the N.T., though old compound. Some MSS. here read paramenontev. This could mean constant residence, but most likely frequent resort for prayer during these days, some being on hand all the time as they came and went.

Simon the Zealot (Simon o Zhlwthv). Called Simon the Cananaean (o Cananaiov) in Matthew 10:4, Mark 3:18, but Zealot in Luke 6:16 as here giving the Greek equivalent of the Aramaic word because Luke has Gentiles in mind. The epithet (member of the party of Zealots) clung to him after he became an apostle and distinguishes him from Simon Peter. See Vol. I on the Gospel of Matthew for discussion of the four lists of the apostles.

Judas the son of James (Coudav Iakwbou). Literally, Judas of James, whether son or brother (cf. Judges 1:1) we do not really know. "Of James" is added to distinguish him from Judas Iscariot (John 14:22). However we take it, he must be identified with the Thaddaeus (=Lebbaeus) of Mark and Matthew to make the list in the third group identical. No name appears in Acts for that of Judas Iscariot.
