Acts 7:52
Compare all
50 Has My hand not amade all these things?’

Israel Resists the Holy Spirit

51 “You astiff-necked and buncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you.
52 aWhich of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of bthe Just One, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers,
53 awho have received the law by the direction of angels and have not kept it.”

Stephen the Martyr

54 aWhen they heard these things they were1 cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.
55 But he, abeing full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the bglory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,
56 and said, “Look! aI see the heavens opened and the bSon of Man standing at the right hand of God!”

Acts 7:52

Which of the prophets (tina twn profhtwn). Jesus (Luke 11:47; Matthew 23:29-37) had charged them with this very thing. Cf. II Chronicles 36:16.

Which shewed before (prokataggeilantav). The very prophets who foretold the coming of the Messiah their fathers killed.

The coming (thv eleusewv). Not in ancient Greek or LXX and only here in the N.T. (in a few late writers).

Betrayers (prodotai). Just like Judas Iscariot. He hurled this old biting word at them. In the N.T. only here and Luke 6:16; II Timothy 3:4. It cut like a knife. It is blunter than Peter in Acts 3:13.

Murderers (foneiv). The climax with this sharp word used of Barabbas (Acts 3:14).
