Acts 15:24

The Jerusalem Decree

22 Then it pleased the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas, namely, Judas who was also named aBarsabas, and Silas, leading men among the brethren.
23 They wrote this letter by them:
The apostles, the elders, and the brethren,
To the brethren who are of the Gentiles in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia:
Greetings.
24 Since we have heard that asome who went out from us have troubled you with words, bunsettling your souls, saying, “You must be circumcised and keep the law” —to whom we gave no such commandment—
25 it seemed good to us, being assembled with one1 accord, to send chosen men to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,
26 amen who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
27 We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who will also report the same things by word of mouth.
28 For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things:
29 athat you abstain from things offered to idols, bfrom blood, from things strangled, and from csexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well.
Farewell.

Continuing Ministry in Syria

30 So when they were sent off, they came to Antioch; and when they had gathered the multitude together, they delivered the letter.
31 When they had read it, they rejoiced over its encouragement.

Acts 15:24

Certain which went from us (tinev ec hmwn, Aleph B omit ecelqontev). A direct blow at the Judaizers, put in delicate language (we heard hkousamen) as if only at Antioch (Acts 15:1), and not also in Jerusalem in open meeting (Acts 15:5).

Have troubled you with words (etaracan umav logoiv). What a picture of turmoil in the church in Antioch, words, words, words. Aorist tense of the common verb tarassw, to agitate, to make the heart palpitate (John 14:1, John 14:27) and instrumental case of logoiv.

Subverting your souls (anaskeuazontev tav yuxav umwn). Present active participle of anaskeuazw, old verb (ana and skeuov, baggage) to pack up baggage, to plunder, to ravage. Powerful picture of the havoc wrought by the Judaizers among the simple-minded Greek Christians in Antioch.

To whom we gave no commandment (oiv ou diesteilameqa). First aorist middle indicative of diastellw, old verb to draw asunder, to distinguish, to set forth distinctly, to command. This is a flat disclaimer of the whole conduct of the Judaizers in Antioch and in Jerusalem, a complete repudiation of their effort to impose the Mosaic ceremonial law upon the Gentile Christians.
