Lydia Baptized at Philippi

11 Therefore, sailing from Troas, we ran a straight course to Samothrace, and the next day came to Neapolis,
12 and from there to aPhilippi, which is the foremost city of that part of Macedonia, a colony. And we were staying in that city for some days.
13 And on the Sabbath day we went out of the city to the riverside, where prayer was customarily made; and we sat down and spoke to the women who met there.
14 Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us. She was a seller of purple from the city of aThyatira, who worshiped God. bThe Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul.
15 And when she and her household were baptized, she begged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” So ashe persuaded us.

Paul and Silas Imprisoned

16 Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl apossessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters bmuch profit by fortune-telling.

What Does Acts 16:13 Mean?

Following Christ's Sabbath-keeping example, Paul imitated Him and instructed believers to imitate Paul as he imitated Christ. Paul preached to both Jews and Gentiles on the Sabbath because the Sabbath is for everyone, not just the Jews. These Gentiles kept the Sabbath in the synagogue alongside the Jews on the seventh day, not Sunday. Paul used the Sabbath to contact people for evangelistic purposes. This practice took place after the Acts 15 conference and continued as a habitual pattern throughout the chapter.

Acts 16:13-15

Christ set the Sabbath-keeping example for his apostles, and Paul, following His example, tells us we are to imitate him as he imitates Christ (I Corinthians 11:1). Paul preached to the Jews and Gentiles on the Sabbath because the Sabbath is for everyone, not just the Jews. These Gentiles were keeping the Sabbath in the synagogue with the Jews on the seventh day, not Sunday.
