Genesis 1:28
Compare all
26 Then God said, a“Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; blet them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over1 all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
27 So God created man ain His own image; in the image of God He created him; bmale and female He created them.
28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, a“Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and bsubdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that1 moves on the earth.”
29 And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; ato you it shall be for food.
30 Also, to aevery beast of the earth, to every bbird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is1 life, I have given every green herb for food”; and it was so.
31 Then aGod saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Articles, Bible studies, and sermons that contain Genesis 1:28:

Genesis 1:28-29

There is a little aside here that we should get to before we go past it, but it will not take long. When these verses are combined with Genesis 1:28-29 and Genesis 4:1-5, it shows that this is not mankind's introduction into eating animal flesh. You can read verse 3 in chapter 9. But in Genesis 1, what God is doing is showing that all life, animal and human, ultimately depends on vegetation: I have given you all the green herbs to eat. And that is true.

Remember Genesis 4:1-5. Abel brought to God an animal sacrifice. That shows us that God had already showed them that their dominion over animals extended to the place that they were able to take an animal's life. God was well pleased with Abel's animal sacrifice. He was so well pleased that it is recorded back in Hebrews 11 that it still witnesses. So God was not overly concerned about the killing of an animal, but what we need to understand is that they understood about sacrificing, and some of the sacrifices had to be eaten. That was a requirement of God. The sin offering was to be eaten, part of it anyway, and the peace offering was to be eaten.

I think that these verses clearly establish that animals' well-being is directly tied to man's exercise of his free moral agency. If a man chooses to obey, God will bless both animals and man. As the animals are blessed, so is man; as man is blessed, so are the animals. If a man's livestock is not eating, then it is pretty certain that the wild things are not eating either.

It is interesting to note the sequence here, especially in verse 15. Much of man's sense of physical well-being is usually illustrated in the Bible by a full stomach. It is an illustration that God uses that if your stomach is full, you feel that things are all right in the world. What He is saying is this: if you look at the sequence, that the animals must first be blessed before the blessing accrues to man.

Genesis 1:26-29

Going forward, I would like us to keep in mind not only that God had determined to make man in His very image and likeness at some point before this, but He had created us to be like Him, productive and fruitful in continuing to enhance every aspect of His creation.

Please keep Genesis 1:29 in your minds throughout this sermon because God gives us a clue right from the beginning of how He expects us to learn His way of creation as opposed to this current world's way of destruction. God tells us, "See, I have given you every herb that yields its seed which is on the face of the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed." Just a clue, but it directly points to the way God's creation should work when in line with Him. It does not destroy what has been set in place by Him, but should produce more.
