For we were saved in this hope, but ahope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees?
But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.
Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For awe do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but bthe Spirit Himself makes intercession1 for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
Now aHe who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints baccording to thewillof God.
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those awho are the called according to His purpose.
For whom aHe foreknew, bHe also predestined ctobe conformed to the image of His Son, dthat He might be the firstborn among many brethren.
Moreover whom He predestined, these He also acalled; whom He called, these He also bjustified; and whom He justified, these He also cglorified.
God’s Everlasting Love
What then shall we say to these things? aIf God is for us, who canbe against us?
aHe who did not spare His own Son, but bdelivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?
Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? aItis God who justifies.
aWho is he who condemns? Itis Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, bwho is even at the right hand of God, cwho also makes intercession for us.
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
As it is written: a“For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”
aYet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor aprincipalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come,
nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmity. While we are waiting in hope, but suffering, the Spirit is a helper of our weakness. It not only strengthens us, but helps us in prayer. We know not what we should pray for as we ought. We often do not know, in our ignorance, what is best. This is especially true in the times of the greatest trial. It was even an experience of our Lord in extremity (John 12:27) and of Paul (Philippians 1:22). But the Spirit itself. "The Spirit himself" (Revised Version). Observe the climax: The creation groans; we ourselves groan; the Spirit himself groans. The Spirit within us intercedes by groaning which are his, in that they are prompted by the Spirit. Augustine says: "It is not in himself, nor in the substance of the Eternal and Blessed Trinity that he groans, but in us because he makes us groan.' Groanings which cannot be uttered. Speechless groanings.
