Romans 9:29
Compare all
27 Isaiah also cries out concerning Israel:
a“Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea,
bThe remnant will be saved.
28 For1 He will finish the work and cut it short in righteousness,
aBecause the Lord will make a short work upon the earth.”
29 And as Isaiah said before:
a“Unless the Lord of1 Sabaoth had left us a seed,
bWe would have become like Sodom,
And we would have been made like Gomorrah.”

Present Condition of Israel

30 What shall we say then? aThat Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have attained to righteousness, beven the righteousness of faith;
31 but Israel, apursuing the law of righteousness, bhas not attained to the law of righteousness.
32 Why? Because they did not seek it by faith, but as it were,1 by the works of the law. For athey stumbled at that stumbling stone.
33 As it is written:
a“Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense,
And bwhoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”

Romans 9:29

And as Esaias said—"hath said"

before—that is, probably in an earlier part of his book, namely, Isaiah 1:9.

Except the Lord of Sabaoth—that is, "The Lord of Hosts": the word is Hebrew, but occurs so in the Epistle of James (James 5:4), and has thence become naturalized in our Christian phraseology.

had left us a seed—meaning a "remnant"; small at first, but in due time to be a seed of plenty (compare Psalms 22:30-31; Isaiah 6:12-13).

we had been—"become"

as Sodom, etc.—But for this precious seed, the chosen people would have resembled the cities of the plain, both in degeneracy of character and in merited doom.

Romans 9:27-29

Esaias also crieth—"But Isaiah crieth"—an expression denoting a solemn testimony openly borne (John 1:15; John 7:28, John 7:37; John 12:44; Acts 23:6; Acts 24:21).

concerning Israel, Though the number of the children—"sons"

of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a—"the"

remnant—that is, the elect remnant only shall be saved.
