1 Corinthians 11:20
Compare all
18 For first of all, when you come together as a church, aI hear that there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it.
19 For athere must also be factions among you, bthat those who are approved may be1 recognized among you.
20 Therefore when you come together in one place, it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper.
21 For in eating, each one takes his own supper ahead of others; and one is hungry and aanother is drunk.
22 What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise athe church of God and bshame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you in this? I do not praise you.

Institution of the Lord’s Supper

23 For aI received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: bthat the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread;
24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said,1 “Take, eat; this is My body which is2 broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death atill He comes.

Examine Yourself

27 Therefore whoever eats athis bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and1 blood of the Lord.
28 But alet a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
29 For he who eats and drinks1 in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the2 Lord’s body.
30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many1 sleep.
31 For aif we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged.
32 But when we are judged, awe are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.
33 Therefore, my brethren, when you acome together to eat, wait for one another.
34 But if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, lest you come together for judgment. And the rest I will set in order when I come.

1 Corinthians 11:20

When ye come together therefore ... - When you are assembled as a church, compare Hebrews 10:25, and see the note on Acts 2:1. Christians were constantly in the habit of assembling for public worship. It is probable that at this early period all the Christians in Corinth were accustomed to meet in the same place. The apostle here particularly refers to their "assembling" to observe the ordinance of the Lord' s Supper. At that early period it is probable that this was done on every Lord' s Day.

This is not ... - Margin, "Ye cannot eat." The meaning of this expression seems to be this. "Though you come together professedly to worship God, and to partake of the Lord' s Supper, yet this cannot be the real design which you have in view. It cannot be that such practices as are allowed among you can be a part of the celebration of that supper, or consistent with it. Your greediness I Corinthians 11:21; your intemperance I Corinthians 11:21; your partaking of the food separately and not in common, cannot be a celebration of the Lord' s Supper. Whatever, therefore, you may profess to be engaged in, yet really and truly you are not celebrating the Lord' s Supper."

The Lord' s supper - That which the Lord Jesus instituted to commemorate his death. It is called "the Lord' s," because it is his appointment, and is in honor of him; it is called "supper" ( ͂ deipnon ), because the word denotes the evening repast; it was instituted in the evening; and it is evidently most proper that it should be observed in the after part of the day. With most churches the time is improperly changed to the morning - a custom which has no sanction in the New Testament; and which is a departure from the very idea of a supper.
