Longing to See Them

17 But we, brethren, having been taken away from you for a short time ain presence, not in heart, endeavored more eagerly to see your face with great desire.
18 Therefore we wanted to come to you—even I, Paul, time and again—but aSatan hindered us.
19 For awhat is our hope, or joy, or bcrown of rejoicing? Is it not even you in the cpresence of our Lord Jesus Christ dat His coming?
20 For you are our glory and joy.

1 Thessalonians 2:19

Crown of glorying (stefanov kauxhsewv). When a king or conqueror came on a visit he was given a chaplet of glorying. Paul is answering the insinuation that he did not really wish to come.

At his coming (en th autou parousiai). This word parousia is untechnical (just presence from pareimi) in II Thessalonians 2:9; I Corinthians 16:17; II Corinthians 7:6 f.; II Corinthians 10:10; Philippians 1:26; Philippians 2:12. But here (also I Thessalonians 3:13; I Thessalonians 4:15; I Thessalonians 5:23; II Thessalonians 2:1, II Thessalonians 2:8; I Corinthians 15:23) we have the technical sense of the second coming of Christ. Deissmann (Light from the Ancient East, pp. 372ff.) notes that the word in the papyri is almost technical for the arrival of a king or ruler who expects to receive his "crown of coming." The Thessalonians, Paul says, will be his crown, glory, joy when Jesus comes.
