1 Thessalonians 4:12
Compare all
10 and indeed you do so toward all the brethren who are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brethren, athat you increase more and more;
11 that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, ato mind your own business, and bto work with your own hands, as we commanded you,
12 athat you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing.

The Comfort of Christ’s Coming

13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen1 asleep, lest you sorrow aas others bwho have no hope.
14 For aif we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him bthose who sleep in Jesus.
15 For this we say to you aby the word of the Lord, that bwe who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are1 asleep.

1 Thessalonians 4:12

honestly—in the Old English sense, "becomingly," as becomes your Christian profession; not bringing discredit on it in the eyes of the outer world, as if Christianity led to sloth and poverty (Romans 13:13; I Peter 2:12).

them . . . without—outside the Christian Church (Mark 4:11).

have lack of nothing—not have to beg from others for the supply of your wants (compare Ephesians 4:28). So far from needing to beg from others, we ought to work and get the means of supplying the need of others. Freedom from pecuniary embarrassment is to be desired by the Christian on account of the liberty which it bestows.
