12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but ^ahad pleasure in unrighteousness.

Stand Fast

13 But we are¹ bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God ^afrom the beginning ^bchose you for salvation ^cthrough sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth,

14 to which He called you by our gospel, for ^athe obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

15 Therefore, brethren, ^astand fast and hold ^bthe traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our¹ epistle.

16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, ^awho has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and ^bgood hope by grace,

17 comfort your hearts ^aand establish you in every good word and work.

What Does 2 Thessalonians 2:14 Mean?

2 Thessalonians 2:13-15

What did Paul teach them that he calls "traditions" (verse 15)? The King James Study Bible says in a note regarding traditions which you were taught: ". . . refers to more than customs. In view here is the totality of the apostolic doctrine as it was given to them."

He is not referring to the rituals or ceremonies of the apostolic church. He is talking about keeping the commandments of God—about keeping the Sabbath and the holy days, about living the Christian way of life, and about salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. I Thessalonians 2:14 says that the Thessalonians were "imitators of the churches of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus." How were the Judeans conducting their Christian lives? They certainly did not think the law of God was done away.

Sanctification is just the opposite of apostasy. Apostasy means "to depart" from truth, from God. Sanctification, on the other hand, is becoming more attached to God until Christ's image is formed in us. There is a contrast, then, between those condemned and those who are going to receive salvation, who will be rescued because they love the truth.
