In Leviticus 9 are the first offerings that the priesthood made after the building of the Tabernacle and the installment of the priests in their office.

It was fire that came out from God that consumed the offering on the altar, and it showed His acceptance not only of the offering but also of the entire proceedings involving these first offerings and the installation of the priesthood. From that point on the coals for the incense altar had to be taken from the brazen altar. That also was holy, and that fire was holy. The altar was the place of sacrifice, the place where the burnt offering, the meal offering, the peace offering, the sin offering, and the trespass offering were made, and I might also add at this point that the offering also that was to accompany the Wavesheaf as well.

Fire represents something. It represents God's desire to destroy sin and to purify His people.

Notice where this comes in the chapter. They were already offering and already had a fire burning under the brazen altar.

You can mark down Leviticus 6:12-13. The instruction there is that the fire under the altar was never to be put out. It was continually rekindled from its own ashes. God did not spark that fire under the altar. Aaron and the priests started the fire, not God. When the fire came out from God, it was not to start the fire, it was to signal to all of Israel that He accepted the offering.

In Leviticus 9:24 God lighted that fire. And that fire, because of being ignited by God, became holy fire, as though the Hand of God touched it. It was never to be allowed to go out. It had to be fed constantly in order to keep it from going out. The fire of God was always with them continuously. It was in the pillar of fire above and below; they were carrying it with them wherever they went.

This Hebrew verb, sometimes rendered shout, sometimes sing, first appears in reference to the peoples’ response to God’s display of His glory, to His appearance in glory. I reiterate: Singing is what God’s people do, not the terror-stricken dwellers in the world-city of Babylon, those against God, those who are “outside the camp.”

In Leviticus 9, the priesthood makes its first offering. As they were making the first offering,

They were scared! And they fell on their faces in fright and reverence to what they just witnessed. I want to impress this upon you. Nothing was hidden by God from these people.

They fell on their faces out of fear, reverence, respect, awe, and wonder from the knowledge that God was in their midst. That last verse shows that God accepted these people—Aaron and the priests—because everything was done according to His will.
