Conduct Prescribed for Priests

8 Then the Lord spoke to Aaron, saying:
9 a“Do not drink wine or intoxicating drink, you, nor your sons with you, when you go into the tabernacle of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations,
10 that you may adistinguish between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean,
11 aand that you may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the Lord has spoken to them by the hand of Moses.”
12 And Moses spoke to Aaron, and to Eleazar and Ithamar, his sons who were left: a“Take the grain offering that remains of the offerings made by fire to the Lord, and eat it without leaven beside the altar; bfor it is most holy.
13 You shall eat it in a aholy place, because it is your1 due and your sons’ due, of the sacrifices made by fire to the Lord; for bso I have been commanded.

Leviticus 10:9-11

When the priest was on duty he was to abstain from wine and strong drink, lest he should commit excess (see Leviticus 10:1), and so become disqualified for carrying out the precepts of the ceremonial Law.

Leviticus 10:9

Strong drink - The Hebrew word is employed here to denote strong drinks of any kind except wine made from the grape.

Leviticus 10:10

Unholy ... unclean - Common, as not consecrated; and what would occasion defilement by being touched or eaten. Compare Acts 10:14.

Leviticus 10:11

That is, "that you may, by your example in your ministrations, preserve the minds of the Israelites from confusion in regard to the distinctions made by the divine Law."
