Titus 1:9
Compare all
7 For a1 bishop must be blameless, as a steward of God, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, anot given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money,
8 but hospitable, a lover of what is good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled,
9 holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict.

The Elders’ Task

10 For there are many insubordinate, both idle atalkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision,
11 whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things which they ought not, afor the sake of dishonest gain.
12 aOne of them, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”
13 This testimony is true. aTherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,

Titus 1:9

Holding to (antexomenon). Present middle participle of antexw, old verb, to hold back, in middle to hold oneself face to face with, to cling to, as in I Thessalonians 5:14.

The faithful word (tou pistou logou). See I Timothy 1:15; I Timothy 6:3; Romans 16:17. Some would see a reference here to Christ as the Personal Logos.

That he may be able (ina dunatov h). Final clause with present active subjunctive. Paul several times uses dunatov eimi in the sense of dunamai, with infinitive as here (Romans 4:21; Romans 11:23; II Timothy 1:12).

The gainsayers (touv antilegontav). Present active participle of antilegw, old word, to answer back, as in Romans 10:21. "The talkers back."
