8 ^aThis is a faithful saying, and these things I want you to affirm constantly, that those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable to men.

9 But ^aavoid foolish disputes, genealogies, contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and useless.

10 ^aReject a divisive man after the first and second¹ admonition,

11 knowing that such a person is warped and sinning, being self-condemned.

12 When I send Artemas to you, or ^aTychicus, be diligent to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there.

13 Send Zenas the lawyer and ^aApollos on their journey with haste, that they may lack nothing.

heretic—Greek "heresy," originally meant a division resulting from individual self-will; the individual doing and teaching what he chose, independent of the teaching and practice of the Church. In course of time it came to mean definitely "heresy" in the modern sense; and in the later Epistles it has almost assumed this meaning. The heretics of Crete, when Titus was there, were in doctrine followers of their own self-willed "questions" reprobated in Titus 3:9, and immoral in practice.

reject—decline, avoid; not formal excommunication, but, "have nothing more to do with him," either in admonition or intercourse.
