Philemon’s Obedience Encouraged

17 If then you count me as a partner, receive him as you would me.

18 But if he has wronged you or owes anything, put that on my account.

19 I, Paul, am writing with my own ^ahand. I will repay—not to mention to you that you owe me even your own self besides.

20 Yes, brother, let me have joy from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in the Lord.

21 ^aHaving confidence in your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say.

22 But, meanwhile, also prepare a guest room for me, for ^aI trust that ^bthrough your prayers I shall be granted to you.

Write (egraya). Epistolary aorist.

With mine hand (th emh xeiri). Instrumental case and a note of hand that can be collected. See II Thessalonians 3:17; I Corinthians 16:21; Colossians 4:18.

I will repay it (egw apotisw). Future active indicative of apotinw (apotiw) to pay back, to pay off. The more usual word was apodwsw. This is Paul's promissory note. Deissmann (Light, etc., p. 331) notes how many of the papyri are concerning debts.

That I say not (ina mh legw). Neat idiom as in II Corinthians 9:4, delicately reminding Philemon that Paul had led him also to Christ.

Thou owest to me even thine own self besides (kai seauton moi prosofeileiv). Old verb, only here in N.T., Paul using the verb ofeilw of verse Philemon 1:18 with prov added. He used every available argument to bring Philemon to see the higher ground of brotherhood in Christ about Onesimus.
