Hebrews 2:9
Compare all
7 You have made him1 a little lower than the angels;
You have crowned him with glory and honor,
1And set him over the works of Your hands.
8 aYou have put all things in subjection under his feet.” For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now bwe do not yet see all things put under him.
9 But we see Jesus, awho was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death bcrowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death cfor everyone.

Bringing Many Sons to Glory

10 For it was fitting for Him, afor whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation bperfect through sufferings.
11 For aboth He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified bare all of one, for which reason cHe is not ashamed to call them brethren,
12 saying:
a“I will declare Your name to My brethren;
In the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to You.”
13 And again:
a“I will put My trust in Him.” And again:
b“Here am I and the children whom God has given Me.”
14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He aHimself likewise shared in the same, bthat through death He might destroy him who had the power of cdeath, that is, the devil,
15 and release those who athrough fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
16 For indeed He does not1 give aid to angels, but He does2 give aid to the seed of Abraham.
17 Therefore, in all things He had ato be made like His brethren, that He might be ba merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
18 aFor in that He Himself has suffered, being1 tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.

Hebrews 2:9

Even Jesus (Ihsoun). We do not see man triumphant, but we do see Jesus, for the author is not ashamed of his human name, realizing man's destiny, "the very one who has been made a little lower than the angels" (ton braxu ti par aggelouv hlattwmenon), quoting and applying the language of the Psalm in verse Hebrews 2:7 to Jesus (with article ton and the perfect passive participle of elattaw). But this is not all. Death has defeated man, but Jesus has conquered death.

Because of the suffering of death (dia to paqhma tou qanatou). The causal sense of dia with the accusative as in Hebrews 1:14. Jesus in his humanity was put lower than the angels "for a little while" (braxu ti). Because of the suffering of death we see (blepomen) Jesus crowned (estefanwmenon, perfect passive participle of stefanow from verse Hebrews 2:7), crowned already "with glory and honour" as Paul shows in Philippians 2:9-11 (more highly exalted, uperuywsen) "that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow." There is more glory to come to Jesus surely, but he is already at God's right hand (Hebrews 1:3).

That by the grace of God he should taste death for every man (opwv xariti qeou uper pantov geushtai qanatou). This purpose clause (opwv instead of the more usual ina) is pregnant with meaning. The author interprets and applies the language of the Psalm to Jesus and here puts Christ's death in behalf of (uper), and so instead of, every man as the motive for his incarnation and death on the Cross. The phrase to taste death (geuomai qanatou) occurs in the Gospels (Matthew 16:28; Mark 9:1; Luke 9:27; John 8:52), though not in the ancient Greek. It means to see death (Hebrews 11:5), "a bitter experience, not a rapid sip" (Moffatt). His death was in behalf of every one (not everything as the early Greek theologians took it). The death of Christ (Andrew Fuller) was sufficient for all, efficient for some. It is all "by the grace (xariti, instrumental case) of God," a thoroughly Pauline idea. Curiously enough some MSS. read xwriv qeou (apart from God) in place of xariti qeou, Nestorian doctrine whatever the origin.
