Hebrews 3:7
Compare all
5 aAnd Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as ba servant, cfor a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward,
6 but Christ as aa Son over His own house, bwhose house we are cif we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope1 firm to the end.

Be Faithful

7 Therefore, as athe Holy Spirit says:
b“Today, if you will hear His voice,
8 Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
In the day of trial in the wilderness,
9 Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me,
And saw My works forty years.
10 Therefore I was angry with that generation,
And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart,
And they have not known My ways.’
11 So I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest.’ ”
12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God;
13 but1 exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
14 For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end,
15 while it is said:
a“Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

Failure of the Wilderness Wanderers

16 aFor who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses?

What Does Hebrews 3:7 Mean?

"Today" injects urgency: the matter cannot be postponed, since God calls only once and now is the time of salvation. Drawn from Psalm 95, a Sabbath psalm, "Today" applies to the weekly Sabbath as a time for self-examination and, more broadly, to the time of one's calling. "Hear" most commonly means "understand," and the author seeks understanding because faith requires it. Without understanding, faith wanes, producing a careless, neglectful life. Israel failed through unbelief, testing God for forty years rather than living by faith daily. The warning targets hardening, skleruno, a gradual spiritual sclerosis that renders God's word ineffective. The promised rest, the Kingdom of God, remains unfulfilled, and drifting believers are urged to use their faith or lose it.

Hebrews 3:7

Verses 7 and 15 focus on "Today," meaning "right now"—the subject must not be put off. In this way, "Today," injects a sense of urgency as well as the thought of "as long as the opportunity exists," implying that now is our time of salvation. It must not be wasted because God calls one only once.

At the same time, he is suggesting that the Israelites failed because they did not use their faith as a day-to-day function of life. Faith is not something to be held in reserve for the really big trials of life, but it is the solid foundation of daily living. It is this level of faith that Jesus was concerned about when He asked, "When the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?" Living faith motivates every thought meant to produce action, beginning with what God requires before all else. Paul is urging believers to work toward using faith in God as the driving force of everything we do each day.
